GARDEN FESTIVITY / CHATEAU SVOJŠÍN
1 August | Saturday 10:00am – 6:00pm
An all-day programme at the chateau and in the courtyard and the garden. Theatre, dance, floral installations.
Baroque cuisine tastings.
Svojšín ranks amongst the oldest manors in West Bohemia. Archive records speak about its foundation as far back as the 12th century, a fact evidenced by the unique Romanesque church in the immediate vicinity of the chateau. After a fire in 1713, the Baroque chateau as we know it today was built on the site of the original building in 1723. Adjacent to the chateau there are terraced gardens, with plants forming typical Baroque patterns, which open into a park in the back area of the estate. Step-by-step efforts to rescue the chateau estate are being made by the village of Svojšín, which became the owner of the property in 1990. There is a connection between the renovation of the chateau gardens and the Garden Festival, which since 2012 has been taking place every August on the first Saturday of the month; the entire estate comes to life with a varied cultural programme as well as rich floral decorations.
The festivities will open with a lecture open to the public at the summer residence. Visitors can take advantage of the opportunity to visit the interiors of the chateau, where they can enjoy tastings of aristocratic Baroque cuisine or explore the ancestry gallery. Immerse yourself in the Baroque tunes of the musical trio of Naladěno (Tuned-Up) in the chateau gardens, learn Baroque dances with the Rond ensemble, watch the ballet creations of the Dobrodinská Ballet group or please your children at a fine-arts workshop or with a puppet theatre performance by Milan Hugo Forman. The grass areas in the park will invite you to sit down with a cup of tea. Fruits are inherently associated with gardens and associated with fruits, in turn, are jams and marmalades. Guests are welcome to bring their own home-made versions and put them up for tastings in the local competition, open to all housewives and cooks. A Baroque dance of the Rond ensemble in the early evening is sure to get everyone moving.
