BAROQUE CELEBRATION IN THE LANDSCAPE / ST LAWRENCE CHURCH ON THE VAVŘINEČEK HILL BY DOMAŽLICE
8 August | Saturday 6:00pm – 10:00pm
A programme of Baroque entertainment at the Chapel of St Lawrence. Dance, music, baroque refreshments and period fireworks.

IMAGE: When visiting the region of Domažlice, it is definitely worth allowing plenty of time. Hiking and cycling trails wind through the surroundings, taking you to a variety of places. You will pass through picturesque villages and discover the natural beauties of the Czech Palatine Forest, the youngest protected landscape park in Bohemia. After the trip, we recommend trying a pie from Chodsko with your coffee and getting fried patties of shredded potato or a savoury potato roll and beer for lunch. Listen to the local dialect and immerse yourself in the music of Chodsko, admire the colourfulness of the regional costumes and the temperament of the local folks.
The festival programme will take you to a literally iconic site of the Domažlice region – the Vavřineček hill with its St Lawrence Church. According to historical sources, the small church was founded in the 10th century by Boleslaus I, Duke of Bohemia, to commemorate his victory over the Magyars, fleeing after their defeat in the Battle of Lech to find refuge in the woods of the Bohemian Forest. This event happened on St Lawrence Day in the year of 995. Almost 700 years later, in 1683, Domažlice was afflicted by a fire which consumed a large part of the town. After the fire had been finally quenched, the town councillors promised to erect a new church on the mountain of Veselá hora, in tribute to St Lawrence. However, this chapel also started falling into disrepair over time and had almost vanished before a new, bigger chapel was built in its place in 1775.
It currently hosts the annual pilgrimage of St Lawrence.
Although you can come here by car from Domažlice, a walking trip in the shade of three kilometres of lime trees makes for a much more romantic journey.
