The festival of Baroque monuments, landscape and culture of the Pilsen Region

29 June – 30 August 2015

14 August | Friday 4:00pm – 10:00pm
RADNICE BAROQUE VARIATIONS / THE TOWN AND THE ST WENCESLAS CHURCH IN RADNICE
A rich programme offering theatre shows, Baroque poetry and dance. At 6:30pm a concert by the Harmony Prague orchestra in the church
8:00pm a theatre show in the amphitheatre by the pond, Baroque fireworks at Kalvárie.
IMAGE: Radnice, promoted to the status of town in 1570 by Emperor Maxmilian II, is situated in the Radnice Stream valley. The eruption of a volcano during the carbon era covered the rich vegetation of the peat moor around Radnice in a layer of ash which started the glory of the Radnice mining industry in the 19th century. In the early 18th century, during the time of the local vicar Antonín Jaroslav Puchmajer, Radnice was one of the centres of the national rennaissance. He founded the first Czech library here in 1818 and assisted in the creation of one of the oldest amateur drama companies in Bohemia (established in 1850). If you connect the cultural programme with walks through the surrounding area, such as to the nearby Kamenec with butterfly meadows, locations of European significance, you might consider tasting (not only) the Baroque delicacies in the local restaurants and cafés. Those who seek evidence of the link between the past and the present, and between traditions and everyday life, respecting the Baroque which was so important for the Bohemian landscape and culture, should visit Radnice. The best time is during the 9 Weeks of Baroque festival.

PROGRAMME
Please accept our invitation to a small prelude just before the programme in Radnice starts, at a small farm in Dvorce u Mokošů situated near Radnice. You can taste local game delicacies and admire the rural mini-zoo. The programme of the Radnice Baroque Variations prepared in Radnice will take the form of town celebrations in three places – on the Kašpar Šternberk Square by the statue of St John of Nepomuk, by the St Wenceslas's Church on the square and at the summer stage by the pond under Kalvárie. The programme will be started at 4:00pm on the square by Bus Line 2015. You can listen to period poetry and watch Baroque dancing. At 6:30pm, there will be a concert of Baroque music at the St Wenceslas Church. The programme will culminate in a theatre performance of Mother Courage in the natural amphitheatre by the pond. From here, a procession with fires and lanterns will go to Kalvárie where the evening will be crowned by Baroque fireworks.
