A CONCERT / THE CHURCH OF THE ASSUMPTION OF VIRGIN MARY
Pavel Svoboda – organ: music by the composers of the peak of the Rennaissance and Baroque periods / Dietrich Buxtehude, George Muffat and Johann Pachelbel, Johann Sebastian Bach.
The Church of the Assumption of Virgin Mary is part of the Plasy Monsatery complex and represents its spiritual centre. The main monastery cathedral of the Assumption of Virgin Mary was consecrated in 1204. The most prosperous period of the Plasy Monastery, which ranked among the most significant spiritual and educational centres of the Bohemian Kingdom, was in the 18th century when a brand new concept of the main buildings within the monastery premises was created from the project of Jan Blažej Santini. The concept planned to replace the existing church with a new, much bigger, church. When the construction was about to start in 1785, Plasy Monastery was closed as part of the reforms of Emperor Josef II. The Church of the Assumption of Virgin Mary was preserved due to this twist. The recently renovated organ was placed on the church's gallery – a great work by the famous Loket organ-maker Abraham Stark from 1688 which is rightly classed among the largest and most beautiful organs in the Czech Republic.
An organ concert by Pavel Svoboda in the Church of the Assumption of Virgin Mary is not only part of the 9 Weeks of Baroque festival but also organised by the Master Organ course in Úterý. The programme of the organ recital will offer music by composers who worked during the late Rennaissance and Baroque eras. You will hear works by Dietrich Buxtehude, George Muffat and Johann Pachelbel; Johann Sebastian Bach's work followed directly on from these composers.
