SVATOBOR WANDERING / THE LANDSCAPE AND THE CHAPEL OF ST MARY THE HELPER / ODOLENKA ON SVATOBOR
An afternoon fun trail for the whole family from the top of Svatobor Hill. An evening programme by the Odolenka spring. Planting of trees, a music production and a blessing of fire.
Svatobor Hill is an important feature near Sušice. Svatobor was a sacred place for Slavs – a sacred grove, a seat of pagan gods. The sacred grove was surrounded by ancient oaks, fenced, with two entrances. Every sacred grove called Svatobor had to have a spring; in this case it is the magical spring called Vodolenka. The spring is surrounded by many legends about the pagan princess Vodolenka who was supposedly buried near Svatobor. We can also find a sacral building here – the Baroque Chapel of St Mary the Helper standing close to the former spa. One of the corner stones of the National Theatre was brought from the top of Svatobor in 1868.
With the Landscape / Svatobor Wandering
The community programme With the Landscape / Svatobor Wandering offers an experience trail around the top of Svatobor. The programme will be aimed at two target groups. The first one is families with children and an afternoon treasure hunt with tasks will be prepared for them. The second (evening) part is for adults who will be able to wander with a guide around Svatobor to the spring and the former Odolenka spa. The guide will explain the historical and geological context of the landscape to participants and there will be several stops to connect with the landscape emotionally. The experience part includes planting trees which everybody can join in, a musical production, readings from historical sources and legends next to the Chapel of St Mary the Helper at Odolenka, and the ritual of blessing fire.
